When starting Brazilain Jui Jitsu one of the important things to consider is how to develop power in the legs.

Some tips from the great masters are below:

How to develop power in the legs

Their are two main ways to develop power one is by running and one is by using weights. The main thing to do is to build up endurance of the muscles. You can gain endurance by running up bleachers and running up hills, the bigger your legs, the more power you will have behind them. Power bags are another way to work out the legs. Any other sports that involves short sprints where you move around quickly will also help you develop power. Anything which has to do with a squat or low position where your thighs are constantly being pushed can build power. Dynamic tension with a partner can also help you to develop power.

High Kicks

A great way to build up muscles for high kicks are to work the groin, lower back, side of hip and inner thighs. This will enable you to perfect high kicks.

How to develop your legs so they don't feel the pain from impact?

You have to train your legs to take the blow and accept the pain without sending them into shock. The way fighters practice in Thailand is by kicking a banana tree with their shins. A banana tree is hard on the inside, but soft on the outside. The way we simulate this practise is by wrapping a carpet or rug round a pole. This will prevent your skin from splitting.

The problem is that your legs are not ready to take the impact because they have never felt that kind of pain. When you shock your body by giving it an impact it has never felt before. When you shock your body in this way it retaliates right away. it wants you to give up. You have to get it used to it in practise by doing it constantly, slowly at first and then building up in intensity so it becomes something you can adjust.

Another way to build up stamina in the legs is to shadow box and use the legs at the same time in your practises. A great school to learn all these techniques is near The Woodlans. BJJ Woodlands, BJJ Oakridge North, BJJ Conroe, BJJ Woodloch.
